Designer Ana Kozak is bringing the best of São Paulo design to the West Coast through her Venice, California-based concept store and gallery, Le Magazyn.
A São Paulo native, Ana regularly travels back to Brazil to scout out talented designers and artists to debut in her store, spotlighting Brazilian and global artisanal makers that represent a selection of São Paulo design – original handcrafted home goods, fashion, table-top accessories, one-of-a-kind jewelry, as well as mid-century and contemporary furniture and art.
With her latest trip to Brazil, Ana recorded some of her favorite places to shop, eat and visit in her hometown of São Paulo. From the incredible food to the bourgeoning art scene, there’s a reason South America’s largest city was named by Travel + Leisure as one of the 50 best places to travel in 2018.
Stay
Staying in a central location is key, as traffic can be tricky.
(1/2) Hotel Unique is centrally located, and stands out with its innovative design, crafted by Brazilian architect Ruy Ohtake.
(2/2) Hotel Emiliano is another luxury hotel in the the heart of Jardins, crafted by Arthur de Mattos Casas. Both hotels make for excellent stays.
Eat / Drink
Have a lunch at (1/5) Santinho Restaurant at the Museu da Casa Braileria or stop for a bite at (2/5) Bossa after shopping at Jardins Neighborhood.
For a great happy hour, hit (3/5) Adega Santago or catch drinks at the (4/5) Botequim do Hugo.
And if you’re missing a little bit of comfort food, stop by (5/5) Primo Basilico Pizzeria for the best pizza in town!
Visit
Start the day early at Ibirapuera Park where you can visit the (1/11) Museum of Modern Art and some nearby Niemeyer architecture buildings, (2/11) Oca and, my favorite, (3/11) Bienal Building
Stop by beautiful museums and sights, like the (4/11) Casa Japao, which features the work of architect Kengo Kuma, (5/11) Pinacoteca do Estado and the (6/11) Museu da casa Brasileria, or take in the art scene at (7/11) Galeria Millan and (8/11) Galeria Lume.
In the evening, visit the new foundation, (9/11) Instituto Moreira Salles. And if you’re in the area for the weekend, take in the flea market at (10/11) MuBE or (11/11) The São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP), open every Sunday.
Shop
There are so many beautiful places to shop in the area, but a few of my favorites are
(1/4) A.Niemeyer, (2/4) Osklen, (3/4) Vix, and, for a few pairs of beautiful sandals, (4/4) Paula Ferber.
